Latin America is a region of contrasts. A market for more than 20 percent of all U.S. exports and a region almost entirely governed by democratically elected governments, it also struggles with corruption and political instability, and many of its countries have been rocked by crime and murder—the byproduct of the rampant illegal drug trade.

Pat has dedicated his career to understanding and working in Latin America, and to fostering strong relationships among partners in both the U.S. and Latin America from a diverse range of governmental, academic, military, and nongovernmental organizations. Pat's career in the region spans 20 years, including teaching at working as an area expert for the U.S. Navy; living and working in Chile, Argentina, and Puerto Rico; and teaching, speaking, and traveling throughout the region, from the Caribbean to the Andes. As Professor of Practice at the William J. Perry Center for Hemispheric Studies, Pat continues to research, write, speak, and educate people from all over the world on the continued importance of Latin America.
